As part of the ongoing efforts to reinforce local governance and participatory democracy mechanisms, a practical workshop was recently organized and facilitated by PVE for Peace in Tetouan, Morocco. The workshop brought together members of the “The Equality, Equity, and Gender Approach Committee of Tetouan” and the “Municipality of Tetouan” to identify and prioritize projects for inclusion in the “Gender Action Plan”. This plan will strengthen the Communal Action Plan that the municipality is required to develop.
The participatory workshop, facilitated by PVE for Peace, was part of a series of reflection sessions being held as part of the FORSATY Program, implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in collaboration with ATIL and funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The program aims to promote peace and security in Morocco through community-led development initiatives and strengthening local governance mechanisms.
The workshop was an opportunity for members of the Equality, Equity, and Gender Approach Committee and the Municipality of Tetouan to collaborate and exchange ideas. Through open and constructive dialogue, the participants identified the main projects and priorities for inclusion in the Gender Action Plan. The plan will focus on promoting gender equality, equity, and empowerment in the municipality, with the goal of creating a more inclusive and sustainable community.
The development of the Gender Action Plan is a critical step in reinforcing the Communal Action Plan, which is a central component of local governance in Morocco. The Communal Action Plan outlines the municipality’s plans and initiatives for the coming year, and is meant to be developed in consultation with community members to ensure that their needs and priorities are taken into account.
Incorporating a gender perspective into the Communal Action Plan is crucial for promoting equality and empowering women in the municipality. Women’s participation in local governance has been shown to lead to more inclusive and effective decision-making, as well as better outcomes for communities. The Gender Action Plan will provide a framework for the municipality to address gender-related issues and promote gender equality and equity in all its initiatives and projects.
The practical workshop was a success, as it brought together key stakeholders from the Municipality of Tetouan and the Equality, Equity, and Gender Approach Committee to work towards a common goal. The collaboration between these groups demonstrates the importance of local governance in promoting peace and security, and underscores the need for community-led development initiatives.
In conclusion, the participatory workshop organized by PVE for Peace as part of the FORSATY Program was a significant step towards strengthening local governance and participatory democracy in Tetouan, Morocco. The development of the Gender Action Plan, which will be incorporated into the Communal Action Plan, will promote gender equality and equity in the municipality and contribute to creating a more inclusive and sustainable community. The program is an excellent example of how community-led development initiatives, facilitated by organizations like IOM and funded by organizations like USAID, can help promote peace and security in communities around the world.
